Before you get into the field and start turning the wheel on your air drill and seeder make sure you look over the machine and complete some maintenance to avoid downtime once the fields are dry.
Below is a checklist to follow to get your drill and air cart ready to go.
Overall Unit:
- Level drill and tillage implements to ensure even consistent product placement. Ideal to do this on a flat surface such as concrete.
- Inspect overall frame for cracks or wear.
- Inspect hydraulic hoses for cracks or wear spots.
- Equalize pressure in all tires.
- Grease everything including wheel bearings.
Ground Engaging & Packing Components:
- Check openers for wear. Excessive or uneven wear can affect the accuracy of seed and fertilizer placement.
- Scrutinize discs. Ensure that edges are sharp and they are in overall good condition so they can break through the soil.
- Inspect Packers. Replace broken or worn packer wheels. Check that they are following accurately being the openers.
Inspect Moving Parts:
- Check all bearings on rollers and auger delivery systems.
- Check disc bearings.
- Tighten all linkages that have bushings.
- Ensure meter rolls are clean and turn freely.
Hoses, Manifolds & Tanks:
- Check hoses and manifolds for any leaks, holes and internal obstructions.
- Check tank compartment seals. Pressure needs to be equalized between the tank and tubes for proper product flow. A pressure imbalance can cause over application of product.
- Test for adequate air flow. Remove the hose from the opener and hold it up into the air, seed should shoot at least 12 inches when you turn the fan on.
Electronics & Calibrations:
- Test all electronics to ensure everything is communicating properly.
- Check seed monitor sensors.
- Calibrate to ensure metering system is working correctly. Metering calibration is critical to accurately apply seed and fertilizer. This should be checked regularly throughout seeding.
Overall, just take a thorough look at the implement from one end to the other as well as the electronic components to ensure everything is in good working condition to make seeding season go as quickly and smoothly as possible.
