Realize Your Potential. Understanding your fields above and below the soil

Do you know your Potential?
Do you often wonder how much moisture is in your soil throughout the growing season and if there is opportunity for more yield?

Ever wondered what your roots are doing and how deep they are pulling moisture from?

Do you know how much rainfall each of your fields have received during the year?

Have you ever thought about how to properly time you're in-season applications, or tried to understand the maturity of your crop in terms of growing degree days?

If you've answered yes to any of the above questions, Martin Deerline can help!

Crop Intelligence is a tool to interpret soil and other environmental data to help determine your crops potential. This solution uses crop available soil moisture, in-season rainfall totals, and historical rainfall trends to calculate the Water Driven Yield Potential for your crop.

At the touch of a finger, the Crop Intelligence app allows you to get a day-by-day snapshot of the potential on your farm and get answers to your questions.

  • If we do not receive any more rain for the rest of the season, will my crops have enough moisture to support my yield goals?
  • There is lots of moisture in the soil and my potential is high, can I push the crop with some in-season fertilizer and achieve yield gains?
  • How much moisture is left for next year?

Crop Intelligence can support these types of questions! Mitigate your risk when it comes to these operational decisions by understanding the data and analysis through crop intelligence.

How is the data collected?
Shortly after seeding, a weather station and attached soil moisture probe are placed within your field. The location of the probe is determined from your knowledge of the field, aided by the use of satellite imagery, yield maps, and topographical data-sets. The goal is to place the probe in an area that best represents the overall average conditions of the field.

Once the station and probe are installed soil moisture data will start to come in about 5-7 days after. The probe consists of multiple sensors at different depths that measure the soil moisture within the profile (Figure A). Below is an example of how you will visualize the moisture and plant root activity throughout the year (Figure B).

Pessl weather stations are used to collect a variety of other local environmental conditions in your field. These stations send sensor data to the Pessl and Crop Intelligence websites via cellular connection at user defined intervals where you can then access from your computer or phone at any time. Soil moisture is not the only sensor that is attached, you may add on many additional sensors to meet your needs.

Additional sensor types include

  • Rain Gauge
  • Air Temperature & Relative Humidity
  • Wind Speed & Direction
  • Solar Radiation
  • Soil Temperature & Leaf Wetness

Environmental data collected by the station can also be used to advise you on in-season decisions. You can have access to Pessl's weather forecasting and disease modelling tools. These tools in conjunction with wind speed, direction, and delta T, can help with in-season timing, helping you get the most of out of your applications.
