Fall Lawn Care

As much as we're not ready to accept it, winter is the horizon. One way to ensure a healthy lawn next spring is to start in the fall. Here are a few tips you can use this season to get ready for the winter months ahead - ultimately setting yourself up for success next year.

The first thing you'll want to do is rake your lawn thoroughly before the snow falls. A build-up of leaves coupled with a layer of snow is a guaranteed way to encourage poor lawn health in the spring. A handheld or backpack blower or vacuum-shredder can help tackle leaves and make yard clean up easier.

If you didn't aerate your lawn in spring, fall is the time to do it. Over time, the soil in your lawn becomes compacted. Aerating your lawn allows water, seed and nutrients to reach the root system of the grass which ultimately results in a richer, healthier lawn. Fall is a great time to aerate to ensure your lawn has the best chance to receive the nutrients it needs for the season ahead. Whether you own a Lawn Tractor, Zero-Turn Mower or Compact Utility Tractor - your local Martin Deerline can help you find an aerator that is compatible with your equipment. Have a smaller lawn? The STIHL RL - MM Lawn Aerator Attachment with the Yard Boss Engine is a great option.

Next, you'll want to apply topsoil or a compost mix and sprinkle some fresh seed. Adding extra seed will help encourage new grass in the spring to fill in some of those sparse areas and contribute to a lush lawn. Applying a fall fertilizer will help provide your grass with all the nutrients it needs for the months ahead and to come back strong in the spring.

The days are getting shorter but there is still time to enjoy your lawn this fall. By utilizing these few tips, you will set yourself up for success and help your lawn get through the cold weather and in good shape come spring.
